How do I view a list of untagged notes (and create other dynamic filters)?

Introduction

“Smart Views" are user-made dynamic folders that organize your notes according to predefined filters.

Creating A Smart View

  1. Click or tap on the Open Preferences icon on the lower left portion of the app.
    • If you are on the mobile apps, tap on the top left hamburger icon first to see the Open Preferences icon on the bottom of the app.
  2. On the Preferences menu, choose General
  3. Look for the Smart Views section, and choose Create a Smart View.

Using the Simple Builder

The Smart View builder contains a variety of note properties you can use to create specific filters. After entering a name and setting an icon for the Smart View, you will need to set up at least one condition to describe the sorts of notes you want to be displayed when the Smart View is selected. To set up a condition, select a Note Property from the left most dropdown list, and then a corresponding Operator and Value to describe the notes that you need. For instance, if you'd like to create a Smart View that immediately displays all notes that contain the word, "Entries" in the note title, you can set it up on the builder as shown below:

Note Property Operator Value
Title includes Entries

You may set up more than one condition, and you can specify whether you need all the conditions fulfilled, or just any one of the conditions fulfilled. Once you've set up the conditions you need, just click on Save, and the Smart View you created should be available on the Tags pane under the Views section.

Using the Custom (JSON) Box

Certain filters cannot be set up using the simple builder yet. An example would be a Smart View that filters notes that are linked to certain tags. For these cases, you will need to define the conditions from scratch in JSON format. There are a couple of examples provided to help you get acquainted with the format, but should you need some further assistance with setting up a custom Smart View, feel free to reach out to the community on our Discord Channel, or send us an email at help@standardnotes.com!
